Artist Statement

“I am always interested in the differences between the two. Me and others, two different kind of people, two different personalities in one person. We communicate with each other in our own language because we all agreed to use words with the same meaning. But we also know that it can be wrong. Sometimes we say, “I want something”, although we really don’t want it. Sometimes we say “yes”, while we don’t agree with something. But people don’t seem to mind this difference between inside and outside. I think we communicate with each other in good understanding of this gap. I want to show this dual communication inside and outside, depicting the transparent veil each of us have.”

You're sur real

D Project Space is pleased to present Moonassi, an illustrator, and his solo exhibition <Moonassi: You’re Sur Real> from 31st January to 8th February. Moonassi has been consistently working on his restrained and sophisticated black and white drawings since 2008. The exhibition highlights the most important and crucial elements of ‘Moonassi drawing’ series; in and out, self and the other and the boundaries between the each.

Every human being is an individual embodiment of social relations. "The other," to Moonassi, has unconsciously been a critical element that creates many different types of ego. Whenever he meets a new person and builds a new relationship with other and even after the end of them, there remain new alter egos. After all, it is only himself left to be found at the border between the real, original himself and the newly created egos of him. Moonassi would like to tell that there even was not a border from the beginning, rather than define the boundaries in the relationships with the others and try to erase the meaningless lines in-between. This shows the heart of Moonassi drawings, “borderless,” which transcends the subject and object and the coordinatization of oneself and the other.

In this exhibition, <Moonassi: You're Sur Real>, by spatially expanding the images of the various egos through repeating and overlapping, the artist speaks about his journey to find the real himself amongst many alter egos of him that were created from the relationships with the countless and unspecified others, and the hardship and frustration that he faces during that journey. The title of the exhibition, <You're Sur Real> is a question or a self-dialogue-which is almost a self-blame, that the artist has been long throwing to himself, and also a complaint with a great affection that he sends to the others who are ultimately and inevitably another ego of him
